How NKU clinicals work, and where we come in

NKU's NP tracks run on student-found preceptors. You identify a preceptor who meets NKU's rules, file a self-placement request in Medatrax, and NKU's coordinators and Contracts & Compliance team approve it. NKU's MSN Student Placement Team offers support to students who ask, and every rotation lasts seven weeks.

That is the stretch we take on. We find preceptors who fit your track and your state, gather the CV, license and responsibilities form NKU asks for, and line up the site contact for any affiliation agreement, so your request lands complete and well inside NKU's window. When one rotation ends, the next preceptor is already lined up.

Before you start

Does NKU find my preceptor?

NKU's NP students find and secure their own preceptors and file a self-placement request in Medatrax. NKU's MSN Student Placement Team supports students who ask for help, and NKU says it can't promise a site in your immediate area. That's why many students start early and bring more than one lead.

Who can precept an NKU FNP student?

An MD, DO, NP or PA with at least a year in their current role, working at the site, licensed and located in a state NKU approves. They can't be your supervisor, a relative or a friend. Specialty offices count for up to 125 hours.

How early should I file my self-placement request?

NKU needs your preceptor's information at least 30 days before the clinical starts and highly recommends 90. New affiliation agreements take the longest, so a site without one needs the earliest start.

Which states can NKU NP students live in?

NKU's NP programs accept applications from Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, Michigan, Nevada, Ohio, Virginia and West Virginia. Other MSN tracks and the DNP follow NKU's separate state table.

How do you work with NKU's own process?

We work inside it. We find the preceptor and site, gather what NKU's reviewers look for, and have your Medatrax request ready early. NKU gives the final approval; we make sure what reaches them is complete the first time.
